Biography

Stephen Hickson Ph.D. is a master instructor in the First-Year Writing Program in the Department of English at Howard University in Washington, D.C. He joined Howard University in 2019 as a lecturer in first-year writing and was appointed master instructor in 2023. Hickson is completing his Ph.D. in cultural studies at George Mason University and holds a master’s degree in English from Georgetown University and a bachelor’s degree with honors in comparative literature from Sewanee: The University of the South. 

Hickson’s teaching interests include rhetoric, composition and literature, with experience at institutions including Northern Virginia Community College and Howard University. His academic work bridges literary analysis and writing instruction, and he has presented scholarly papers at professional conferences on topics ranging from narrative and identity to language coding and class positionality in literature. 

In addition to his faculty role, Hickson has participated in academic scholarship through conference presentations and research on literature and cultural studies. He has presented at meetings such as the Center for Humanities Research Conference and the Northeast MLA Convention, reflecting his commitment to exploring intersections of culture, narrative and language.
