Biography

Alla Tovares is Professor of Linguistics in the Department of English. Dr. Tovares is equally committed to research, teaching, and service. She is the recipient of the Howard University President’s Medal of Achievement, College of Arts and Sciences Outstanding Service Award, Dean's Award, and Faculty Excellence Award. Her main research interests include language ideologies, conflict discourse (in the context of Russia’s war in Ukraine), and online communication, especially digital food discourse. She is the co-author (with Raúl Tovares) of How to Write about the Media Today (ABC-CLIO, 2010) and co-editor (together with Cynthia Gordon) of Identity and Ideology in Digital Food Discourse: Social Media Interactions Across Cultural Contexts (Bloomsbury, 2020) and the contributor to seventeen academic volumes. Her articles have appeared in Text & Talk, World Englishes, Narrative Analysis, Discourse & Society, Journal of Sociolinguistics, Review of General Psychology, the Journal of Language and Social Psychology, Multilingua, and Discourse, Context & Media.
