Biography
Dr. Yousef Tizabi received his B.A. in Physics from University of California at Berkeley in 1970 and his Ph.D. in Physiology from Georgetown University in 1974. Following a postdoctoral fellowship at the Laboratory of Clinical Sciences at NIMH/NIH, he joined Howard University in 1976 where he is currently Professor of Pharmacology.
Dr. Tizabi is an educator an avid researcher. He was the recipient of the outstanding research award from the College of Medicine at Howard University in 2002 and has been cited as Faculty Scholar at Howard University since its inception in 2001. He has trained several Masters, Ph.D. and Postdocs and has enjoyed continuous funding by NIH, Pharmaceuticals and other sources.
Dr. Tizabi holds two US patents and has over 150 peer reviewed publications and 13 book chapters. He has organized several scientific symposia and has delivered numerous presentations at national and international meetings. He has participated in NIH study section and has been a reviewer for numerous scientific journals including Biological Psychiatry, Neuropsychopharmacology, Molecular Psychiatry, Lancet and Nature Communication. He has been on editorial boards of several Journals and served as associate editor for Neurotoxicity Research.
Dr. Tizabi’s main areas of research involve elucidation of neurobiological substrates of mental disorders including depression and drug addiction (alcohol and nicotine). He is also keen in understanding the contribution of toxicants to neurodegenerative diseases. He strives towards providing novel and more effective interventions in neuropsychiatric/neurodegenerative diseases, especially in relation to Parkinson’s disease.
