Biography
Dr. Tatiana V.D. Sanses, MD, MS, FACOG, is a tenured Associate Professor at Howard University College of Medicine and Chief of the Division of Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery, Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, Howard University Hospital. With over a decade of experience, she is building a nationally respected program at the intersection of clinical patient-centered care, education innovation, and translational research and academic leadership. Dr. Sanses earned her medical degree in Belarus and completed Internal Medicine, Transitional Year Residency at Howard University Hospital, OBGYN residency at Georgetown University Hospital, and Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery fellowship at Greater Baltimore Medical Center/University of Maryland Medical Center, followed by a Master of Science in Clinical Research from the University of Maryland. Her expertise in Urogynecology and Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery has led to more than 40 peer-reviewed publications, invitations to national panels and conferences, and leadership roles in major clinical trials. She has received over $4.5 million in competitive funding and national recognition from the NIH and the American Urogynecologic Society. Her scholarly impact includes an H-index of 19 and nearly 2,000 citations.
Dr. Sanses’ research program in Women’s Health focuses on pelvic floor disorders, gynecologic surgery, chronic conditions affecting only women or affecting women differently, aging, geriatric syndromes pathophysiology (urinary incontinence), clinical/surgical outcomes, and dissemination and implementation science. Her studies explore pathophysiology of urinary incontinence in older women, bladder function, mobility, muscle structure, clinical outcomes, community engagement in research, and others. She leads multi-institutional research, including federally funded projects evaluating treatment preferences and real-world outcomes. Dr. Sanses has authored numerous high-impact, state-of-the-science systematic reviews that inform national practice guidelines in gynecologic surgery. Her work spans topics such as surgical equity in hysterectomy and pelvic floor procedures, mesh and graft use, non-hormonal therapies for genitourinary syndrome of menopause, and simulation-based surgical training—advancing evidence-based standards and strengthening care through imaging, clinical evaluation, and treatment innovations. Her work supports both clinical improvement with emphasis on quality of life, improved clinical and surgical outcomes, decreased disability in women, and public health strategy.
Clinically, Dr. Sanses provides specialized care in Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery. She is the only surgeon in her department performing both office-based and inpatient procedures for prolapse and urinary incontinence. She has initiated three new services at Howard University Hospital HUH)—Urogynecology, Robotic Gynecologic Surgery, and Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy. She was a first surgeon at HUH to perform a robotic hysterectomy and a complex pelvic reconstructive surgery. Her clinical volume exceeds 50th-percentile based on MGMA metrics. Patient reviews highlight her skill, empathy, and communication.
As an educator, Dr. Sanses has developed new curricula in Urogynecology and Robotic Gynecologic Surgery. She serves as Urogynecology core faculty for the OB/GYN residency at HUH and NIH-supported training programs. Her mentorship spans students, residents, fellows, and junior faculty—many of whom have gone on to publish, present nationally, and secure competitive training positions. Her long-term vision includes launching a center for Women’s Health Research Training program while pursuing excellence in clinical training of next generation providers in Women’s Health.
