Robert Thompson

Biography

Captain Robert Thompson holds the position of Chief Investigator with the Howard University Department of Public Safety.  Before his current position, Captain Thompson served as an Investigator within the Department.  During that time, he played an active role in crime prevention, resulting in the reduction in victim related crimes committed on Howard University campuses.  As Chief Investigator, his objective is to always maintain a high level of professionalism and accountability, exemplifying his passion for excellent customer service.

Captain Thompson has worked with many offices on campus, as well as with outside agencies such as the Metropolitan PD, Prince Georges County PD, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Through these partnerships, the University has experienced a significant reduction in overall crimes, as well as a reduction in acts reported as Jeanne Clery violations. He believes that members of the Howard University Department of Public Safety should maintain a balance between law enforcement, crime prevention, and excellent customer service, all while protecting the best interest of the Howard University community.

The last twenty years of his thirty-four-year tenure with the Metropolitan Police Department, Captain Thompson held the position of Detective Grade One, managing a variety of misdemeanor, felony, and narcotic related investigations working out of the Third District Police Station. In that capacity Captain Thompson has applied for and was granted over two hundred arrest and search warrants. This involved spending hundreds of hours giving sworn witness testimonies in D.C. Superior, U.S. District, and Juvenile Courts.

Captain Thompson has completed training in; Interview and Interrogation, Detecting Danger and Deception, Incident Command, and Active Shooter. He has successfully completed the Drug Enforcement Academy and is a member of the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA). Most recently, Captain Thompson successfully completed an online COVID-19 Contact Tracing course, which was offered and authorized by Johns Hopkins University. Captain Thompson has received numerous accommodations for outstanding performance in the field of Investigative Services from the Howard University Department of Public Safety, the Metropolitan Police Department, and the U.S. Department of Justice.
