Sergeant Major Michael Mack. Sgt. Major Mack joins the Office of Student Services as the new Assistant Director for The Office of Military and Veteran Services. In this role, I will supervise all functions and operations of the Office of Military and Veterans Services, bringing three decades of Marine leadership and a career built around caring for service members and their families to Howard's military-connected students. 

i enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in June 1986 and completed recruit training at Parris Island, South Carolina, where I was meritoriously promoted to Private First Class upon graduation. Over 30 years of service and 13 duty stations, I served in every element of the Marine Air-Ground Task Force, with assignments spanning California, Hawaii, Okinawa, and beyond.

A few of my billets included Chief Drill Instructor at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, Drill Instructor at Officer Candidates School, Company First Sergeant at Marine Barracks 8th & I, First Sergeant of the 1st Combat Engineer Battalion, and Sergeant Major of both Recruiting Station Orange County and the Wounded Warrior Regiment. I also served in joint duty within the Office of the Secretary of Defense. My professional military education includes Honor Graduate of Combat Enhancement Training and Leadership Award recipient at the Staff Non-Commissioned Officer Advanced Academy.

Sergeant Major Mack earned his bachelor's degree from Georgetown University, double majoring in Media, Communications, and Humanities and in Politics and International Relations. He graduated Magna Cum Laude with a 3.919 GPA as a Class Distinguished Graduate and Tropaia Award recipient and is currently two courses from completing his MBA in Project Management.

I retired from the Marine Corps on 1 July 2016 and went on to serve at the U.S. AbilityOne Commission as Director of Oversight and Compliance (GS-15) and Lead for the Office of Veterans Services at the Pentagon. I remain active with the Marine Corps Association and Foundation Board of Governors, the West Coast Drill Instructor Association, the Marine Barracks 8th & I Alumni Association, and the Wounded Warrior Regiment Mentor Program.

My personal awards include the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, among numerous campaign and service decorations. Sergeant Major Mack has three adult children and is married to the former Charlene B. Johnson of King George, Virginia.
