Biography

Karl M. Thompson, Ph.D., is a tenured associate professor of microbiology. His work focuses on understanding the molecular and cellular mechanisms of infectious diseases and host-pathogen interactions. His research explores how microorganisms adapt, survive and cause disease, with an emphasis on identifying pathways that can be targeted for new therapeutic interventions. Through laboratory-based investigations and collaborative research initiatives, Thompson contributes to advancing scientific knowledge in microbiology while addressing health disparities that disproportionately affect underserved communities.

In addition to his research, Thompson is actively engaged in teaching and mentorship, supporting undergraduate and graduate students pursuing careers in the biomedical sciences. He incorporates hands-on laboratory training and research-driven instruction to prepare students for advanced study and professional work in microbiology and related fields. He works to foster diversity in STEM and create pathways for students from underrepresented backgrounds to enter scientific research careers.

Through his combined efforts in research, teaching and service, he plays a key role in Howard University College of Medicine’s mission to advance health equity and develop the next generation of scientists and health professionals.
