Appointed in 2021, Mighty oversees initiatives that strengthen Howard’s leadership in health care education and delivery, including the University's strategic relationship with Adventist HealthCare, the development of a new academic hospital, and the integration of Howard's health sciences learners within the Adventist system.
Mighty previously served as the University’s dean of the College of Medicine and Vice President of Clinical Affairs beginning in 2015. Under his leadership, the College of Medicine achieved unprecedented milestones, including securing its largest single donation—a transformative $31.7 million gift from the Bloomberg Philanthropies—and a successful reaccreditation by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME). Mighty also spearheaded efforts that doubled the College's research funding, elevated its national recognition through higher U.S. News & World Report rankings, and established a multidisciplinary COVID-19 testing and vaccination clinic that played a critical role in serving the greater D.C. community.
A nationally respected physician-executive, Mighty is board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology and a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Prior to Howard, Mighty held positions as chief medical officer and vice chancellor for clinical affairs at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center.
Mighty’s educational background reflects a commitment to excellence and innovation. He earned his Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) from the University of Maryland School of Medicine, completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Maryland Medical System, and holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) focused on health care leadership.
As a key member of President Ben Vinson III’s cabinet, Hugh Mighty continues to shape the future of health care education and clinical service delivery, advancing Howard University’s legacy as a leader in addressing health disparities and promoting equitable care.
