Cherie Spencer received her undergraduate degree from Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry and earned a MS degree in Community Health Education from West Virginia University School of Medicine in Morgantown, WV. Following graduation, Ms. Spencer worked in Cancer Prevention and Control at West Virginia University as an information specialist, outreach program specialist and as program coordinator for the Appalachian Leadership Initiative on Cancer. Ms. Spencer relocated to the Washington, DC area after taking a position at Washington Hospital Center to manage community outreach and education programs for the Cancer Institute. Ms. Spencer also served as the Partnership Program Manager for the National Cancer Institute’s Cancer Information Service Mid-Atlantic Region. Ms. Spencer currently serves as the Director of Community Engagement at the Howard University Cancer Center. In this role, she provides oversite for the Cancer Center’s community outreach, education, screening and patient services programs. Her public health work has been focused on developing strategies to increase access to and utilization of cancer screening services and developing academic and community partnerships.
