Biography

Gloria Cain, MSW, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, currently serves as the Director of Training for the Howard University SBIRT Community Expansion program and Co-Chairs the Howard University Department of Psychiatry’s Community Engagement Project sponsored through a collaboration between Howard University, Johns Hopkins University, and the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). She has over 20 years of experience in training and education in motivational interviewing through the Howard University Alcohol Research Center. Dr. Cain oversees SBIRT training for the health professional graduate and medical programs at Howard University including the departments of social work, nursing, counseling psychology, and medical residency programs. Dr. Cain is an instructor in the Department of Psychiatry’s Addiction Medical Education Rotation, and Assistant Professor with the Howard University School of Social Work. Dr. Cain’s research interests include ethnic factors of alcohol and substance misuse among African Americans and the efficiency of screening and brief intervention in community and health care settings. She is the author and co-author of peer reviewed articles. She received her Master of Social Work degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Social Policy and Practice and a Doctorate of Social Work from The Catholic University of America.
