02/2018-Present Clinical Endodontics (D4) Course (Howard University College of Dentistry)

Howard University College of Dentistry  (Clinic Director 2019-Present)Clinical Endodontics is a year long clinical course that is trains Senior Dental Student Doctors in clinical endodontic methods. The students are trained in diagnosis, prognosis, treatment planning using interdisciplinary approaches as well as clinical procedures with exposure to contemporary armamentarium such as the surgical operating microscope. Rotary endodontics is the clinical method of instrumentation. Students are taught Calamus obturation as well as traditional lateral condensation methods. Digital radiography is utilized in the clinic, aiding the students in obtaining working length with Apex locators or direct measurement on the digital radiograpgy system. If Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) is warranted, students have exposure to utilize this diagnostic tool.Senior Year Student Dentists that have declared a passion in pursuing Endodontic Residency training, and have been vetted, are asked to participate in Howard’s “Future Colleagues Of Excellence (COE)” clinical endodontic curriculum declaration starting Fall Semester Senior year. This curriculum is a pre-endodontic residency curriculum. Student dentists, who expect references from the Department, are asked to successfully participate in COE literature review using the Colleagues curriculum. Pre-Endodontic Residency Senior Clinical Seminars  focus on the Colleagues articles that student dentists are expected to present. In addition, they are expected to increase their departmental clinical experiences to a minimum of 16 canals completed from start to finish. For example, 16 canals are: 3 molar teeth (9-12 canals); 2 premolar teeth (2-4 canals); 2 anterior teeth; at least one microscope case and 1 retreatment case. Research pursuits are encouraged. Students are expected to create endodontic portfolio that accompanies them on their endodontic interview.Required Competencies for GraduationMock Board Competency: Success is determined by Mock Board Evaluation criteria per Mock Board Grade Sheet. A numerical grade assessment is computed according to CDCA guidelinesOral Examination Didactic Competency (Endodontic Walk): Must be completed successfully by Fall Senior Year.  Success is determined by faculty evaluation of quantitative and qualitative measures of critical thinking and problem solving. A numerical grade assessment is given according to clinic assessments.Root Canal Therapy Clinical Competency Demonstration: Clinical competencies are determined by faculty selection, understanding that students have varied competency levels. Cases must be cleared by endodontic department BEFORE patient is scheduled. Molar tooth treatment challenge is granted if endodontic faculty determines the student has demonstrated proficiency. If not, completion of one (1) premolar tooth or one (1) anterior tooth is required to demonstrate the competency level for clearance, in addition skill level demonstrated on all cases from Junior and Senior Year Clinical Endodontics.

05/2018- Present International Dental Program Course (Howard University College of Dentistry)

Howard University College of Dentistry (2018- Present Course Coordinator)International Student Program (IDP) course development was initiated May 2018. The curriculum is designed to assess, advise, and mentor our international student doctors who have entered the Howard University College of Dentistry community. The intention of the curriculum is to provide direction, instruction and evaluation of international students for the purpose of easy transition to the didactic and clinical rigors of the Endodontic Department. The curriculum is comprised of student presentations of case based literature in seminar format, paper assignments to assess writing ability, clinical orientation skills testing and self-assessment as well as diagnosis, treatment planning, prognosis as well as critical thinking and problem solving skill sets. The doctors are also required to complete one clinical case under strict supervision to monitor present clinical skill level in root canal therapy. The curriculum serves as indicators for the international doctor's readiness for the junior year in the Department of Endodontics for didactic and clinical instruction.

Dental Patent: United States Patent No: US 10,470,859 B2 : STERILE DENTAL SETUP PACK

Sterile Dental SetUp Packs are a patient care pathogen control to improve the quality and safety of care delivered in dentistry while performing aerosol generating procedures. Patient safety and the quality of care is the important focus of Sterile Dental SetUp Packs. The Aim: Decrease cross contamination of SARS-CoV-2 transmission through contact, droplet or airborne transmission, other viruses and bacterial transmission on the disposables that dentists use in treatment operatories while performing aerosol generating procedures. The intention is to improve health outcomes, and save lives as a new and emerging technology needed in preventing virus and bacterial cross contamination, especially of SARS-CoV-2 that can adhere to surfaces during aerosol procedures such as root canal therapy. By improving infection control, Sterile Dental SetUp Packs will enhance the experience of safe outcomes in patient care while controlling pathogens that infect during  airborne transmission in dental care aerosol producing procedures such as root canal therapy. Date of Patent: Nov. 12, 2019STERILE DENTAL SETUP PACK Nesbitt, et. al
