Biography

Dr. Olusola Olabanjo, an Assistant Professor in the department of Information Systems and Supply Chain Management, was a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Center for Equitable Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Systems (CEAMLS), Morgan State University, Baltimore, Maryland, USA. He is an interdisciplinary researcher whose work spans computational mathematics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, mathematical modelling, scientific computing, biomedical engineering, and data-driven decision-support systems.

He earned his Ph.D. in Industrial and Computational Mathematics from Morgan State University, where his doctoral research focused on the development and application of finite element methods for modelling and simulating the biomechanics of lung parenchyma. He also holds an M.Sc. in Computer Science with Distinction (a perfect CGPA of 5.0/5.0) and a B.Sc. in Computer Science with First-Class Honours from Lagos State University, Nigeria. He graduated as the first ever student with a First Class degree since 10 years of the establishment of the Department.

Dr. Olabanjo's research lies at the intersection of mathematics, computing, and artificial intelligence. His work includes finite element modelling of biological systems, machine and deep learning, medical and health informatics, numerical methods, mathematical modelling, multi-criteria decision analysis, natural language processing, and responsible and equitable AI. His research has been published in peer-reviewed journals and scholarly outlets covering computational biomechanics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, mathematical sciences, healthcare analytics, and scientific computing.

Before his postdoctoral appointment, Dr. Olabanjo served as Adjunct Faculty in the Department of Mathematics and as a Graduate Assistant at CEAMLS, Morgan State University. He has also worked as a Research and Teaching Assistant at Morgan State University and as an Assistant Lecturer and Graduate Assistant in the Department of Computer Science at Lagos State University. His teaching experience includes programming, database systems, algorithms and complexity, data structures, web development, mathematics, and computational methods.

In 2022, he was selected as an AI Research Intern at the Frontier Development Lab, where he contributed to the development of a natural-language-processing system designed to support decision-making related to hydrogen research and funding. The project involved collaboration within an initiative sponsored by organisations including NASA, the U.S. Department of Energy, SETI Institute, Trillium Technologies, and Google.

Alongside his academic career, Dr. Olabanjo has substantial software engineering, database administration, and web-development experience. His technical expertise includes Python, R, PHP, Wolfram Mathematica, LaTeX, MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite, Power BI, Plotly Dash, JavaScript, REST APIs, and related data and web technologies.

Dr. Olabanjo has received several academic and professional distinctions, including a Merit Award from the Frontier Development Lab, recognition as the Overall Best Master's Degree Student at Lagos State University, a Best Paper Award at SciGaIa in Pretoria, South Africa, and an Innovation Award for his undergraduate project. He has also contributed to externally funded research projects in artificial intelligence, agriculture, public health, and data science.

His broader research vision is centred on developing mathematically rigorous, computationally efficient, explainable, and socially responsible artificial intelligence and modelling approaches for solving complex problems in healthcare, science, engineering, and society.

Funding

Dr. Olabanjo has participated in externally funded interdisciplinary research projects spanning artificial intelligence, agriculture, public health, and data science. He served as a researcher on the Digital Soil Mapping for Optimal Agricultural Yield and Sustainable Soil Biodiversity in Southwest Nigeria Using Artificial Intelligence (FUNAAB-SMARTSOIL) project, funded at $296,053. He also served as Co-Principal Investigator on the Development of a Self-Test Application for COVID-19 Using Artificial Neural Networks, funded at $2,000, and as a Data Scientist on a Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) funded project valued at $95,000. His research experience also includes participation in the Frontier Development Lab programme on an AI/NLP research initiative sponsored by organizations including NASA, Google, and the U.S. Department of Energy.
