Edgar Newton Jackson, Jr., PhD

Biography

Dr. E. Newton Jackson, Jr., (a native of Washington, DC) is a tenured, Full Professor in the Howard University (HU) College of Arts & Sciences. Currently, Chairman in the Department of Health, Human Performance & Sport Management. Prior to returning to HU, he was on faculty in Florida, at three state university institutions (Florida State University (FSU), Florida A&M University (FAMU), & University of North Florida (UNF) for a combined 27 years). Honored and bestowed the faculty title, Professor Emeritus, at the University of North Florida, Dr. Jackson served in the College of Education and Human Services (COEHS), & prior to spring 2014, he served as their Associate Provost and Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs. He is a seasoned and successful administrator with over 45 years of hands-on experience in higher education, including university administration, classroom instruction, service and research. He is considered an energetic, self-motivated and goal-oriented leader with strong time management skills. Dr. Jackson is considered professionally and thoroughly knowledgeable in academic affairs, accreditation, student services, athletics, compliance & certification, logistical planning, budget management, facility and project management. Prior to his appointment in Academic Affairs, he served UNF as a Professor and Department Chair, and served Florida A&M University in a variety of roles including Department Chair, Associate Dean in the College of Education, Head Swim Coach (M,W), and Interim Director of Athletics. While in Tallahassee previously, he was on the faculty at Florida State University, serving as the Sport Management Program Director. From 1981 until joining FSU (in 1998) he was on support staff, faculty (UG & Graduate), and coaching staff at Howard University. During the 1990s and leading to the 1996 Atlanta Games, Dr Jackson worked for the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) Treasurer and later, President (Emeritus), Dr. LeRoy T. Walker. Dr. Jackson has extensive experiences serving as a NCAA Division I Head Coach (Men & Women Swimming & Diving) serving at one point as the only African American Head Coach at the NCAA D-I level; men’s basketball assistant coach at Grambling State University, women’s basketball associate head coach at WVSC. He has various college student affairs experiences along with "creating" and leading a study abroad instruction and global education opportunity for The Florida State University "Global Sport Management Program" over twenty-five years ago in Paris, France and London (United Kingdom) which still exists today. Dr. Jackson was inducted as a Research Fellow (#265) of SHAPE America (formerly AAHPERD Research Consortium) in 2007. In 2013, he was inducted a FELLOW in North American Society of HPERSD. In 2018, he was bestowed the Distinguished Administrator Award by National Association of Kinesiology in Higher Education (NAKHE). In 2019, he was inducted as a National Association of Kinesiology in Higher Education (NAKHE) FELLOW (#36). Also in 2019 he was honored in the Inaugural Hall of Fame Class, as a Master Professor, in the Commission on Sport Management Accreditation (COSMA).
