Bernard Woolfolk

Biography

Bernard P. Woolfolk is an adjunct assistant professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Howard University, where he has taught undergraduate and graduate computer science courses since 1992. His teaching focuses on object-oriented programming, large-scale software development, software engineering, cloud computing and modern software development practices.

Woolfolk brings more than 35 years of professional software engineering and architecture experience to the classroom. He currently serves as a senior software architect at Whiteboard Federal Technologies Corp., where he works on the design and development of large-scale software systems for the federal government. His professional experience spans enterprise software architecture, Java and Spring development, cloud computing with AWS, distributed systems, data integration and ETL, semantic web technologies and Agile software development.

Throughout his career, Woolfolk has held senior technical and architectural positions with organizations including AT&T Bell Laboratories, Lucent Technologies, General Dynamics, MarkLogic Corp. and NCI Information Systems. At Bell Laboratories, he served as a member of technical staff and participated in the AT&T Visiting Professor Program at Howard University. He later attained the position of distinguished member of technical staff at Lucent Technologies.

Woolfolk’s teaching draws heavily on his continuing industry experience, emphasizing the connection between computer science fundamentals and the design, development, testing and maintenance of real-world software systems. He also explores the evolving role of cloud technologies and generative artificial intelligence in modern software engineering.

Woolfolk holds a master’s degree in computer science from Columbia University and a bachelor’s degree in computer science from The City College of New York.
