Angela Powell is an assistant professor and coordinator of classical voice at the Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts at Howard University, shaping the next generation of vocal artists within one of the nation’s premier historically Black institutions.
She is an American soprano and arts administrator known for her dual commitment to performance excellence and arts leadership. As a singer, Powell has built a career that bridges classical vocal repertoire, spirituals, and culturally significant works that highlight African American musical traditions. Her performances often reflect a deep respect for both European art song and the legacy of African American composers and arrangers, contributing to the continued vitality of this repertoire on the concert stage.
In addition to her performing career, Powell has held significant leadership and educational roles. She previously served as artistic director of the School for Creative and Performing Arts and as artistic director of The Children's Theatre of Cincinnati, where she developed educational programming, artistic development for young performers and produced/directed several productions. Her leadership roles have focused on expanding opportunities for emerging artists, strengthening arts education initiatives, and fostering programming that reflects diverse cultural voices.
Powell’s career represents a model of the artist-administrator: a musician who not only performed on the stages of the American, European and Southeast Asian music venues, but continues to perform and shape the cultural landscape behind the scenes. By combining artistic achievement with organizational leadership, she contributes both to the preservation of vocal traditions and to the advancement of equitable practices within the worldwide arts sector.
